Our guide to Heart of Florence Small Group Guided Walking Tour
Your journey begins in the historic Medici Family District. In the heart of Florence, you’ll walk along the same narrow streets once traversed by the Medici, touch the stones that built their residences, and see the very monuments they admired daily. The first highlight is Palazzo Medici Riccardi, their original residence in the San Lorenzo district, where you’ll also find their Church and mausoleum—the Medici Chapels.
Just a short walk away lies the breathtaking religious centre of Florence, featuring the Cathedral crowned by Brunelleschi’s magnificent dome, the Baptistery of San Giovanni with its stunning Porta del Paradiso (Gates of Paradise), and Giotto’s elegant bell tower, renowned as one of Italy’s most beautiful.
The walk continues along lively Via Calzaioli, where you’ll encounter the imposing Orsanmichele Church, a gothic masterpiece adorned with statues of patron saints representing Florence’s powerful medieval trade guilds. Next, you’ll visit the vibrant Mercato della Paglia (Straw Market). Be sure to rub the nose of the famous Porcellino (pig) and toss a coin into the fountain to bring good luck!
Your journey leads to Piazza Signoria, one of the most stunning squares in the world and Florence’s political heart. This “outdoor museum” features the striking Fountain of Neptune with its grand marble statue by Ammannati, and the sculptural masterpieces of the Loggia dei Lanzi, including Cellini’s Perseus and Giambologna’s Rape of the Sabines. Overlooking it all is the majestic Palazzo Vecchio with its iconic crenellated Arnolfo tower. You’ll also have the opportunity to visit Michelozzo’s courtyard and admire the palace in all its grandeur.
Finally, you’ll arrive at the romantic and picturesque Ponte Vecchio, Florence’s oldest bridge, famous for its charming jewellery shops.
At the end of your guided tour, why not experience a typical Tuscan Lunch in a characteristic Restaurant, located in the very heart of Florence.
