Our guide to Girona, Figueres and Dali Museum Tour
Salvador Dali's home town of Gironna is just a short drive away through the picturesque Catalonian countryside and, combined with the Dali Museum in Figueres, makes for a fascinating day trip from Barcelona.
After a short drive in an air-conditioned coach from Barcelona, your tour starts with visit to the magnificent walled Medieval city of Girona, originally built by the Romans as a fortress many centuries ago.
Here you will find high medieval walls and a labyrinth of narrow streets but the city is most famous for its intricate Jewish Quarter, widely considered to be the best preserved in Europe. A leisurely walking tour through the ancient streets introduces you to the history and culture of this fascinating city and there is also a chance to view the impressive Cathedral which dates back nearly a thousand years.
There is plenty of free time for further exploration and to get something to eat before heading to the second town on the itinerary and the birthplace of one of Spain’s most celebrated artists - Salvador Dali.
In Figueres you can visit the surreal Teatre-Museu Dalí. Built upon the remains of the former Figueres theatre, everything in the museum was conceived and designed by the artist himself in order to offer visitors a real experience of getting inside his captivating and unique world.
Here you will find the broadest range of works spanning from his earliest artistic experiences and his surrealist creations down to the works of the last years of his life. There is also the chance to visit the Empordà Museum which features a wide chronological spectrum of Catalonian art and archaeology, from pre-history to modern day.
Please note this is a partially guided tour and you will have the majority of the day at leisure.
