Our guide to Volcano Wonders of Reykjanes Geopark
Grindavík, once a bustling fishing village, now serves as a poignant testament to the unstoppable power of nature. Recently evacuated due to intense volcanic activity, the town bears the visible scars of its battle with eruptions, rendering much of it uninhabitable.
This tour invites you to journey deep into the Reykjanes Peninsula, where human resilience meets the awe-inspiring forces of nature. Discover the transformative aftermath of volcanic activity and witness how Grindavík has been shaped by these extraordinary events.
Your carbon-neutral adventure begins with a pickup in Reykjavík, followed by a scenic drive through dramatic volcanic landscapes and along rugged coastlines. Our first stop is the Seltún Geothermal Area, where bubbling mud pools and steaming vents showcase the raw and untamed energy beneath the earth’s surface. This stop is only available when the road to Seltún is open
Next, we’ll hike to Fagradalsfjall Volcano, Iceland’s youngest and most dynamic volcano. The 45-minute trek takes you across still-warm lava fields to a breathtaking viewpoint overlooking fresh lava flows from recent eruptions. Covering a distance of 5.5 km (3.4 miles) with moderate elevation gain, this hike is ideal for anyone in good physical condition.
After exploring the lava fields, we’ll visit the coastal village of Grindavík. Here, you’ll see how its courageous residents quickly constructed protective barriers to shield the town from encroaching lava flows. You’ll also learn about the dramatic tectonic shifts that have forever altered the landscape—and the lives of those who once thrived in this remarkable place.
