The Venice of America: The Best Attractions in Fort Lauderdale
A guide to attractions in Fort Lauderdale
Fort Lauderdale is dubbed the Venice of America and here we take you through some of the best attractions in the city.

Fort Lauderdale is known for its beautiful beaches, miles of intricate canals, arts and culture, but the city has so many other amazing attractions as well.

Fort Lauderdale is a popular place to be based if you have Florida theme park tickets as it is within easy driving distance of the likes of Orlando and its array of theme parks yet offers visitors the chance to enjoy Fort Lauderdale beach, which is regarded as one of the best beaches in the US.

If you are heading to Florida this year, then a visit to this stunning area should certainly be on your to-do list. Here are some attractions you could enjoy during your trip.

The Everglades

Taking an airboat adventure in the Everglades is a must and the Sawgrass Recreation Park, which offers 30-minute airboat rides, is only 25 minutes away from Fort Lauderdale.

The Sawgrass Recreation Park’s Exotic Wildlife exhibit and Glades exhibit allow visitors to hold baby alligators and see leopards, turtles, panthers and birds of prey.

Florida Everglades Airboat Adventure operate the airboat tours. On one of these tours visitors will be informed about the different types of wildlife that reside in the Everglades National Park.

Fort Lauderdale Beach

Fort Lauderdale Beach is arguably the main attraction in the city and millions of people from across the US and the world visit this golden three-mile stretch of sand.

My Fort Lauderdale Beach, who represent businesses along Fort Lauderdale Beach and share events occurring along the beach, have revealed why the beach is so special.

They said, “What makes Fort Lauderdale Beach such an attractive place to stay and play is the ease of getting here and getting around.

“It truly is a destination in which world-class shopping, dining, entertainment, the arts, history, nature and of course an ocean of water sports are all steps from your ‘home away from home’. This, coupled with our warm hospitality one can feel from the moment you come over the bridge, makes Fort Lauderdale Beach unmatched when choosing a vacation destination in South Florida.”

Visitors to Fort Lauderdale Beach can also enjoy free live music as Friday Night Sound Waves, a series of music events, is taking place every Friday from 5:30 - 8:30pm at Las Olas until 18November 2016.

Bonnet House

If you decide to stay at Fort Lauderdale hotels during your vacation in the Sunshine State, then you just have to make the effort to visit Bonnet House.

Accredited by the American Association of Museums and listed on the national Register of Historic Places, this 35-acre historic estate on Fort Lauderdale Beach is an extraordinary blend of art, history and nature.

The whimsically-designed house was built in 1920 and was home to artists Frederic and Evelyn Bartlett, and now the museum and gardens are visited by thousands of people every year.

Museum of Discovery and Science

Visitors can spend a whole day exploring hundreds of interactive exhibits including the new EcoDiscovery Center at the Museum of Discovery and Science.

Some of the museum’s attractions include:

  • ride on an Everglades Airboat Adventure
  • dig for fossils alongside a giant prehistoric megalodon
  • walk into a stand-off between a sabre-toothed cat and an imperial mammoth
  • watch North American river otters play in their two-storey indoor/outdoor habitat
  • experience hurricane force winds in the Storm Center

That’s not all as the museum puts on a range of science demonstrations and presentations and lets visitors meet an alligator and a six-foot snake.

If that’s not enough, then the neighbouring AutoNation IMAX 3D Theater, which boasts the biggest screen in South Florida, immerses people into a five-storey-high film adventure. Visitors can also watch the latest blockbuster films during their trip to the museum.

To find out about the permanent or special exhibitions visit the Museum of Discovery and Science website.

Dining in Fort Lauderdale

The city is also home to a vibrant culinary scene and Kara Franker, who is the editor-in-chief for Kara on the Coast, highly recommends visitors try out some of the area’s delicious food during their holiday in the city.

She said, “Travellers should visit Fort Lauderdale because it exudes a laid-back beach town vibe, but still has a variety of upscale shopping and dining options to choose from.

“I recommend dining at the brand new Burlock Coast located at The Ritz-Carlton in Fort Lauderdale. Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the rustic yet elegant hotspot is a great place to sip on a handcrafted cocktail and nosh on fresh Florida eats.”

The diverse landscapes of Fort Lauderdale

You don’t need to just have Disney World Orlando tickets to experience the magic Florida has to offer as the city of Fort Lauderdale is like no other city in that it is home to a range of diverse landscapes that will leave visitors in awe of this stunning city.

Greater Fort Lauderdale, the official travel source for the city, explains, “With more than 6,500 acres of Broward County Parks, 23 miles of clean, sparkling coastline and countless animal and plant species, Greater Fort Lauderdale is the perfect destination for visitors to explore some of the world’s most diverse landscapes.

“From shopping on Las Olas Boulevard, to gondola rides on the canals, to its picturesque historic riverfront visitors will be spoilt for choice when visiting this diverse city.”
